Bought this unit for trimming my Havanese dog nails. Havanese are a toy dog so their nails are not that big. Unit works OK and has nice features, but is very underpowered.
Pros: safety shield, cordless, easy to use, less likely to cut too far back, not very loud and doesn't scare them when running, 2 speeds, several different selectable nail size wholes to fit various sized pets.
Cons: not enough power, takes too long to grind down nails (even on small dogs), safety shield doesn't rotate directions (would be nice to rotate the shield and not the tool in your hand to find the correct fitting hole size
Overall: so far this is the best cordless nail trimmer and I have tried several popular brands now. Still, it is not powerful enough to really get the job done in a timely manner. I must cut longer nails with old fashioned scissor type nail trimmers and then use this unit to grind back. The unit is much easier on their nails and does reduce the chances of catching the nerve when trimming. I would love to see Oster come out with their corded trimmer but add the safety shield so I have enough power to get the job done in a timely manner and avoid the waste of disposable batteries being used (not sure why no one has done this yet). Out of all the units I have purchased this is the only powered one that I might purchase again but it really needs power improvements because the tiny nails on my pets easily stop the motor.

Our small terrier mix absolutely despised nail clippers. It was nearly impossible for me or a groomer to cut her nails. As soon as you were about to clip she'd yank her paw out of our hand.
The grinder took some getting used to for her, but she's pretty good with it now. This takes some patience, and it doesn't grind at lightening speeds. But once you get the nails down if you hit them once a week for a few minutes you are good to go.
It's not rocket science to use. Choose speed one or two, put the nail into one of the holes in the guard (if using), then grind away. The sanding belts work better for me and seem to take more material off than the stone. But you'll probably want to get the replacements belts as they become dull after some time.
I started off by just touching the grinder to her nails briefly with the motor OFF, and simultaneously giving her little treats periodically. Then I put it on the low speed and briefly tapped all her nails with the guard, not yet grinding, all the while treating, just to get her used to the sound of the motor. When she was good with that I would lightly and briefly tap her nail to the grinding belt, alternating between nails. Slowly but surely she started to relax to the point where I could hold each nail on there for several seconds and grind off a significant amount of nail. Note that It took me severals days and multiple sessions of 5-10 minutes to get here.
She freaks out if I try and use the high speed on fresh batteries because it's pretty intense, but once the batteries are warn down a bit on low speed you can kick it onto the high speed which is then a bit more manageable.
The first one I got was DOA on the high speed setting so I sent it back. Second one was fine.
You'll generate a fair amount of nail dust, and you do get a bit of a burning nail smell. The guard will somewhat contain the dust, but it falls out of the holes as you move the grinder around.
My biggest complaint is that for me the high speed is too high. Would be great if it had 3 speeds. But you can tell the way they engineered it that the low speed utilizes two of the AA batteries, and then the high speed all four. Not a lot of engineering here, but hey, it's cheap.
If you have a hard time clipping your dogs nails, it's worth a try.

This product is probably okay if your pet has had a professional pedicure but for starting from scratch it does not help. Nail dust builds up on the grinding wheel and so it no longer trims. You are only allowed 3-4 second grinding. Save your money and have a pro do it. It saves a lot of grief!

My puppy has not freaked out with this product. In fact, she wanted to play with it. It does not sound loud and my pup took to it well.

I tried using this product on my small dog several times. I just sat with her and turned it on, until she would let me run it over her body & paws. However, she was too scared of the noise & grinding to allow me to use it to trim her nails. Also, her nails were too big for the 2nd hole, and too small for the larger hole. I returned this product.
